Investigating AI Washing in Content Production Tools

01 See the Problem Was…
HIV.gov leadership had been told by a previous contractor that their Canva content was AI generated, delivering highly efficient production timelines that justified the contractor’s approach and costs. BLN24 was tasked with verifying those claims before the client committed further resources, requiring an independent evaluation of AI assisted content production across multiple tools and content types.
The underlying risk was AI Washing, a practice where vendors overstate their AI capabilities to win or retain contracts, and the client’s trust in their consulting partners depended on an honest assessment.
02 Logan’s Role
- Led the evaluation effort, expanding the project scope to include video, graphic design, and copywriting across four tools: Canva, Pictory, Copilot, and Microsoft Designer.
- Collaborated with a marketing lead, graphic design lead, and three copywriters, organizing multiple prompt outputs and content samples for structured side by side comparison.
- Reported findings to BLN24’s Communications Director, VP of Marketing, and HIV.gov’s director, applying judgment to present the results clearly without explicitly stating the client had been misled.
03 Results
- Documented that the previous contractor’s efficiency claims were unsubstantiated across all content types, confirming AI Washing had occurred and protecting the client’s trust in BLN24’s work.
- Proved that manual revisions were required across video, graphic design, and copywriting, and that production timelines were delayed rather than reduced as claimed.
- Identified one exception: Copilot produced results that meaningfully reduced drafting and editing times for copywriting, providing the client with an actionable and honest recommendation for moving forward.
